The title of world’s most expensive tequila bottle was up for grabs when Ley .925 created a 1.3-litre bottle of tequila called “The Diamond Sterling”. While nobody has purchased this bottle yet to award it with the most expensive title officially, The Diamond Sterling is valued to sell at an obscene price of $3.5 million, which calculates the tequila’s cost per litre at over $2.5 million.
However, the spirit inside The Diamond Sterling bottle is not extraordinary. The spirit is made from one hundred per cent 7-year-old blue agave tequila plant distilled by Hacienda La Capilla. Many spirits are said to be of higher quality than the one contained in this bottle. Spirits from designer bottles that cost $650 are comparable in taste at a more reasonable price. However, this tequila bottle’s extravagant cost is not because of the spirits within but rather the bottle itself. Tequila Ley .925 created the bottle of The Diamond Sterling. The design of the bottle, however, was modified by Mexican artist Fernando Altamirano who used platinum instead of glass and created the details using 4000 loose diamonds with a total weight of 328 carats.
Fernando Altamirano. Fernando Altamirano is a popular Mexican artist known for his modification of bottle designs. Altamirano is also credited for creating the most expensive bottle in the world named “Acqua di Cristallo Tributo a Modigliani which costs $60,000. This water bottle was made from 24-carat solid gold. Altamirano is also credit with designing the most expensive cognac globally known as Cognac Dudognon Heritage Henri IV made from 24 karat gold, sterling platinum, and 6,500 loose diamonds.
The Tequila Bottle Contender. Before the Diamond Sterling was created, the world’s most expensive tequila bottle was made of platinum and white gold. Named Pasion Azteca Tequila, this bottle made by Tequila Ley .925 and Altamirano was purchased by a private collector for a staggering $225,000 in 2006.
On Tour. After the Diamond Sterling was revealed in late 2010, the bottle has been on tour in the major cities of Europe and the Middle East. In 2012, the bottle was scheduled to be displayed at Spec’s Superstore in Downtown, Houston where it will be bidding. Visitors who want to see the bottle in person will not get to taste from the bottle. However, Spec’s will offer a tasting of good tequila for viewers.
As of today, there is no news that the Diamond Sterling has been sold. So, there is now a question of whether or not the Pasion Azteca Tequila still retains its title of being the world’s most expensive tequila if one major requirement for the title is being sold.
