Nick Cannon: Early Life
Cannon had a rough childhood before reaching his success. Born in San Diego, California, on the 8th of October 1980, he grew up mostly raised by his grandfather on his father’s side after his biological parents divorced. Both he and his father call his grandfather “dad.”
He spent his childhood at the Bay Vista Housing Projects in Lincoln Park. His neighborhood is one of the gang-infested areas in Southeast San Diego. He used to be a member of the dangerous street gang called “Lincoln Park Bloods” but opted to leave after one of his close friends died. He finished high school in nearby Spring Valley’s Monte Vista High School, where his schoolmates elected him as the president of the campus’ African Student Coalition. He had his first-ever break in the stand-up type of comedy scene through the locally-aired cable access program of his father.

In 1999, Cannon began his musical career after forming a rising rap group called “Da G4 Dope Bomb Squad.” The rap trio opened for several best-selling celebrities like 98 Degrees, LFO, and actor-rapper Will Smith. His solo career began in 2001, after signing with Sony’s Jive Records. He was able to release his self-titled studio debut album back in 2003.
In 2005, the rapper established his record label, which he dubbed Can-I-Ball Records. He initially wanted to release his sophomore studio album called “Stages” before the end of the year, but it did not prosper because of his budding acting career. He launched another record label called N’Credible Entertainment in 2009. By 2011, he released his first mixtape titled “Child of the Corn” then followed it with 2016’s “The Gospel of Ike Turn Up: My Side of the Story.”
Cannon started hosting the improv comedy show “Wild’ N Out” that aired on MTV in 2005. He also created and produced the show. During the same year, he was tapped by Nickelodeon to host the slime stunt at the Kids’ Choice Awards.
