In 2002, the village of Antoli in Vadodara, Gujarat, India, had an increase in the number of leopard sightings. However, these wild animals were not something the villagers desired to come across while going about their days in the town.

According to the family who witnessed the interaction, the leopard would make an appearance in their yard consistently every night, from around 9:30 pm to 11 pm. This routine continued from October 8, 2002, until October 22, 2002.

The leopard then disappeared for a period of time, but it returned and rekindled its friendship with the cow from November 4, 2002, until November 29, 2002. The leopard’s regular visits and consistent timing of these visits were a source of intrigue and fascination for the family and the community.
Out Of Nowhere, The Visits Stopped
Although the leopard appeared to have a regular schedule for visiting its friend, the cow, the visits suddenly stopped. The family of the cow was uncertain as to where the leopard went after November 29th, as it only returned much later in December.

However, community members reported that they had seen the leopard around the town even though it had stopped visiting the cow. The sudden disappearance of the leopard and the reason for its absence was a mystery for the family and the community.
The Relationship Included Cuddles and Clean-ups
When the leopard visited the cow, the two animals would engage in activities typically associated with long-time friends. They would roam around together, clean each other’s heads, and even snuggle on the ground.

The story was all over the media. People found out from the Times of India that “The big cat slowly rolls over and raises one paw and puts it gently on the cow’s head, and makes purring sounds.”

According to Rohit Vyas, an honorary wildlife warden of Vadodara, who had the opportunity to witness the interaction between the leopard and cow, the leopard’s visits started to decrease. Vyas said, “We have been keeping watch, but unfortunately, the frequency of the leopard’s visits has decreased.”

However, Vyas was uncertain about the reason for the leopard’s departure, and it seemed that the animal had stopped coming around for good. Vyas and his team planned to continue to monitor the situation and try to determine the reason behind the leopard’s absence.
A Conservationist Offers His Take On The Behavior
Many have pondered over the nature of the relationship between the leopard and the cow. However, the actual reason behind their association remains a mystery. During an interview with the Times of India, conservationist H.S. Singh offered a possible explanation for their unique friendship. He stated that “Sometimes animal behavior can get modified.”

Singh elaborated on his statement, saying that this could be due to the specific environment in which the leopard lived. Her previous habitat could have played a role in shaping her behavior–ultimately leading to the development of her friendship with the cow.

H.S. Singh also went on to tell the Times of India that, in this case, it was likely that the leopard, having passed the sub-adult stage, lived her early life in a rural area rather than in a truly wild environment.

The rural setting in which the leopard likely lived may have caused her to grow accustomed to seeing farm animals around and thus not have any intention of hurting them. Furthermore, it’s also possible that the leopard was orphaned or separated from her mother, and the cow acted as a maternal figure for her.

Due to the immense curiosity regarding the leopard’s mother, further investigation was conducted, and it was discovered that the leopard’s mother was, in fact, relocated to a nearby forest along with other leopards in the area, which resulted in the separation from her little cub.
